My uncle passed away shortly before my 18th birthday. Rather than celebrating being allowed to drive and legally able to buy beer at the grocery store, my days were filled with an unbearable pain that I hadn’t felt before. It was the first death I experienced in my family. I caught myself saying phrases like “He left us too soon” or “He is looking down on us now” in the hope of bringing comfort to my aunt…
